“Floating Melon (2015)” (“Fu Guo”) is a Chinese-Spanish short film by award-winning filmmakers Roberto F. Canuto and Xu Xiaoxi, known for their poetic and socially engaged cinema. The film represents the second chapter of the trilogy “Invisible Chengdu,” a series of stories set in Sichuan and spoken in the local Sichuanese dialect, portraying hidden lives within Chengdu’s urban underworld.
Sinopsis: In a day of passion and nightmare, Xiao Cheng, a young man in Chengdu, faces a terrible reality after breaking the law. When his lover dies from a drug overdose, fear pushes him to seek help from his friend Fiona and her girlfriend Lola.
Between panic, guilt, and mistrust, the three friends must decide how far they are willing to go to hide the truth — until nothing turns out as expected. In a place where everything may be fake, anything can happen.
Through its raw realism and intimate perspective, “Floating Melon” reflects the confusion of a generation searching for moral guidance in a society ruled by appearances and repression.
It exposes the invisible LGBT community in China — not always openly persecuted, but often forced into secrecy by family pressure and lack of protection. The film highlights the fragility of identity and the danger of fear in a culture where silence becomes survival.
