“Ni Jing: Thou Shalt Not Steal” is a Chinese–Spanish short film by award-winning filmmakers Roberto F. Canuto and Xu Xiaoxi, known for their poetic and socially engaged cinema. The film marks their first project shot in China after their previous collaborations in the United States and represents the first chapter of the trilogy “Invisible Chengdu.”
Xiaofan, a young woman working at a karaoke club in Chengdu, wakes up one morning in a remote forest with her clothes stained in blood and no memory of what happened. As fragments of her memory return, she recalls a night filled with betrayal, fear, and her troubled relationship with her unpredictable boyfriend, Chen Zhong. Now, she must make a decision that could change her life forever.
Filmed in Sichuan using both the local dialect and Mandarin, it portrays the struggles of a young generation confronting moral choices and emotional immaturity in a society governed by appearances, materialism, and family pressure. Based on real events, the film blends realism with psychological tension to explore the clash between love, guilt, and survival in contemporary China — a society where hypocrisy and fear often dictate the limits of personal freedom.
