Visions of Asturias (2016–2023)
A poetic duology by Roberto F. Canuto & Xu Xiaoxi
(“Advent / Ad-vientu” & “Water Circles Under Cotton Clouds”)
Visions of Asturias brings together two award-winning short films that capture the poetic and emotional essence of northern Spain — a land of mist, faith, memory, and rebellion. Through their unique blend of poetic realism and social allegory, filmmakers Roberto F. Canuto and Xu Xiaoxi transform the landscapes of Asturias into mirrors of identity and resistance.
The duology explores themes of LGBTQ+ visibility, human rights, tradition, and empathy — confronting oppression through lyrical imagery, evocative music, and deep emotional resonance. Both films, though separated by seven years, share a visual dialogue — from spiritual intimacy to dystopian allegory.
🎞️ Included Films
🕯️ Advent (2016) / Ad-vientu
Set in the Asturian mountains, Advent portrays the return of a young man to his conservative village for his mother’s funeral.
Through silent rituals and repressed emotions, the film reveals the conflict between faith, tradition, and sexuality.
Shot in Asturian language and awarded at international festivals, it reflects the filmmakers’ deep connection to Asturias’ cultural and spiritual landscape.
🌫️ Water Circles Under Cotton Clouds (2023)
In a dystopian near future scarred by pandemics and political repression, a group of young people steals vaccines — some to sell, others to share hope.
This ensemble narrative blends realism and metaphor to explore inequality, empathy, and collective resistance.
Shot entirely in Asturias with an international cast and the music of Andrea Centazzo, the film reimagines the region as a timeless space of struggle and rebirth.
